About
While colleges and universities have historically been battlegrounds for many important civil rights movements, the last decade has seen a rise in student activism grounded in social justice and focused on diversity and inclusion. Most recently, student activists have responded to the murder of George Floyd in Minnesota, nationwide police violence involving BIPOC, income inequality, among other concerns. This activism has frequently taken the form of lists of demands, particularly from BIPOC students.
Senior student affairs officers (SSAOs) play key roles during this historical moment. This live briefing provides insights from SSAOs concerning what their students are demanding, as well as the costs and benefits of responding in certain ways, or of not responding at all. Speakers will share strategies and stories about how they have approached, even embraced, student activism and responded to an increased focus on campus climate.
