About
COVID-19. Racial justice protests. Economic recession. Calls for police reform. An increasingly tense political environment. Over the past year, our nation has experienced events that have presented myriad challenges – some novel and some seemingly ever-present— with which our institutions of higher education must contend while striving to continue to fulfill their missions.
As college and university administrators have sought to make important, strategic decisions to ensure the physical and mental well-being of members of the campus community, respond to student demands and needs, and protect the financial viability of their institutions, counsel have been called upon to advise them regarding the wide range of legal issues presented by such decisions. For example, how should institutions respond to tuition refund class action suits or claims of negligence by those who allege they contracted COVID-19 at a university-related event? How should an institution interested in addressing potential instances of systematic racism within its own walls go about reviewing and revising problematic policies and procedures? Given the challenges of a polarized population, how can an institution effectively respect free speech rights and create a welcoming, diverse, inclusive, and equitable campus community?
This workshop will provide essential legal updates and practical tips to help counsel navigate these challenging times. Workshop sessions will cover a variety of critical topics, such as:
- Actionable steps to take to address systemic racism
- Regulatory compliance issues related to COVID-19
- COVID-19-related liability concerns and risk mitigation strategies
- How to effectively respond to students’ demands and needs
- Campus police reform
- Legal ethical issues implicated by COVID-19
- Student mental health
- Free speech issues
- Title IX
- And more!
In addition to virtual panel sessions with an opportunity for live Q&A with the presenters, virtual discussion groups will allow participants to exchange ideas, pose questions, and share experiences and solutions on a number of important topics with colleagues in an informal setting.
Please join us this February from anywhere you find yourself with an internet connection to come together and learn the latest legal developments and approaches from experts and discuss areas of common concern with your colleagues!
