Democracy & Power Civic Engagement Training Program
July 6, 2016
This year Loyola University New Orleans was proud to partner with the Open Democracy Project to present the Democracy and Power Civic Engagement training. During this interactive training facilitated by Mr. Trupania Bonner, Founder of Crescent City Media Group and Project Coordinator for Open Democracy Project, students gained more in-depth knowledge about community advocacy and the electoral process. The training involves four main components: Census, Reappointment, Redistricting, and the Elections Cycle.
As a part of the training participants had the opportunity to experience our Interactive Democracy & Power Game, tying the full process together. As a result of the training, students gained a better idea of how actively engaging politically through civic engagement can have a positive impact on community and constituents.
Following the training, students held voter registration drives on campus and held several programs to educate peers on the importance of voting as a college student. One of our student organizations even created a video to advocate for more voter education on campus and polling sites. We are excited to continue our work with the Open Democracy Project and get more students actively engaged in the voting cycle during the upcoming elections.
