Welcome to SA Weekly, your new destination for higher ed news, NASPA research and policy, constituent blogs, and more.
Education Dept.'s Deregulation Push Gets Mixed Reviews “Trump administration's proposal to overhaul rules for college accreditors is panned by consumer advocates. But online course providers and some who study higher ed say re-examination of accreditors is long overdue.”
The Chance to Question Your Accuser “In July, a federal judge instructed the University of Michigan to break from its policies for investigating sexual assault and instead to hold a live hearing so that a student accused of rape could question his accuser. The decision could have national implications as it is part of an emerging pattern of case law: establishing that those accused of campus sexual violence have the right to question the evidence against them.”
How Harvard Can Legally Favor Alumni Children and Athletes “This isn't the first time the university has faced scrutiny over policies that favor white over Asian American students. Comments in the 1980s by admissions officers on alumni children, athletes and Asian Americans may be relevant today.”
Destabilizing the Student Insurance Pool? “Professional associations fear that the Trump administration’s new rules on health insurance could raise the cost of plans that institutions offer -- and lead to some college students, particularly graduate students, paying much more for health care.”
Former Fraternity Member Gets House Arrest In Penn State Hazing Death “A judge has sentenced a former leader of the Penn State fraternity to three months of house arrest over the hazing death of Timothy Piazza last year. Ryan Burke, who was in charge of recruitment at Beta Theta Pi fraternity, is the first person to plead guilty in the case.”
For Many College Students, Hunger 'Makes It Hard To Focus' “As students enter college this fall, many will hunger for more than knowledge. Up to half of college students in recent published studies say they either are not getting enough to eat or are worried about it.”
Counting Credentials “The Credential Registry is several months into its mission to document all U.S. credentials, but the finish line is further than ever.”
Helping College Student-Parents “A new influx of money at the University of Houston’s on-campus childcare centers shows the impact of a federal program.”
