Title: Indigenous Latina/o/x First-Generation-to-College Students Healing Racialized Campus Climate Institutional Trauma through Counter-Storytelling
Dr. Vanessa L. Martínez, winner of NASPA's 2024 Ruth Strang Award, will discuss her research findings on Indigenous Latina/o/x first-generation-to-college students at a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSIs). She will discuss the ways these students healed through challenging experiences of racialized campus climate institutional trauma through culturally relevant counter-storytelling. Participants will be introduced to the theoretical frameworks that formed the basis of this qualitative study: Intersectionality, Critical Race Theory, and the Psychosociocultural Model. Dr. Martinez will discuss best practices for serving Latina/o/x students at HSIs and share examples of storytelling and counter-storytelling used by Indigenous Latina/o/x first-generation-to-college students as a method of healing.
