Action-Oriented Assessment: Strategies for Collecting Data by Engaging Participants

This live briefing will present strategies for active, engaging data collection with face-to-face groups of students, faculty, and staff. Participants will be encouraged to think about the creation of artifacts as a fun (and easy) way to collect data that can be used to evaluate the success of programs and services. Strategies for reporting the data collected from these non-traditional embedded approaches will also be presented, to encourage practices related to closing the loop.
This live briefing will engage you to try using non-traditional data collection methods that are action-oriented, participatory, and entertaining. The presenter will highlight techniques commonly used in strategic planning processes that can be used for the collection of data and artifacts to enhance the student or staff experience, as well as provide suggestions for use of these data.
Using Angelo & Cross’s “Classroom Assessment Techniques,” and Gray, Brown, and Macanufo’s “Gamestorming: A playbook for innovators, rulebreakers, and changemakers,” participants will consider few different techniques to obtain feedback from students, faculty, and staff. The approaches highlighted are useful to both collect data and encourage participants to elaborate on the learning activities or programming they have experienced. These approaches can also be easily transitioned into strategic planning activities. Attendees should leave this session ready to implement new and exciting ideas about assessment they can readily deploy on their campuses.
By attending this session, participants will be able to:
- identify and select interesting and engaging assessment techniques for assessing programs, events, or other educational opportunities;
- design/customize interesting assessment techniques for assessing programs, events, or other educational opportunities; and
- plan for using the data from non-traditional assessment methods in supporting unit or institutional assessment processes.
