Joint Candidate Statement

2022-2024 Co-Chairs Statement and Platform: Expanding Our Reach and Striving for Equity
The Gender and Sexuality Knowledge Community (GSKC) has long been a community that affirms and empowers trans and queer NASPA members. Building upon the innovative work of past GSKC co-chairs, our plan is to continue to center goals of collective liberation and equity in our intended platform. In particular, we would like to see GSKC progressively expand its membership and its work within NASPA/the student affairs community. Additionally, we want to continue to affirm and center the voices of Trans & Queer, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (TQBIPOC) within our KC and NASPA. As two long-time members of the GSKC, it would be our honor to serve in this capacity as the KC expands our reach and strives for equity.
Namely, we have developed four main goals that we see as integral to our platform. They include:
Unapologetically Centering the Realities of Queer and Trans Individuals Who Hold Multiple Minoritized Identities
- Through our own practice and scholarship, we have sought to center the needs of queer and trans people with multiple minoritized identities. Our past work within the GSKC has shown this commitment and our mission as co-chairs would be to forward this aim.
- As a knowledge community committed to libration and equity, we must confront the way racism perpetuates a system of inequities for Black folks. Thus, it is imperative that the GSKC takes an anti-racist stance challenging systems, practices, and attitudes that maintain structural inequities against all people of color. Thus, our mission as co-chairs would be to work with NASPA and all of the KCs to move the need toward dismantling structural racism and the impact of bias.
- Our goal is that the GSKC continues to center and elevate the experiences of TQBIPOC, those with disabilities, and those who come from low-income/working-class backgrounds (among other identities). We want to continue to advance programming done by our knowledge community, as well as the advocacy that the GSKC engages within NASPA and the student affairs community.
Maximizing Volunteer Engagement
- The GSKC has been a welcoming space to many student affairs practitioners. Whether it be the social or professional development opportunities, people have historically seen our knowledge community as an affirming and authentic space.
- We desire to not only welcome people into the GSKC but empower them to take advantage of the various volunteer opportunities within NASPA. In particular, we would do intentional outreach to communities that are oftentimes erased within the association including but not limited to: undergraduate students (by way of partnering with the NASPA Undergraduate Fellows Program, or NUFP), graduate students and early-career professionals (through connecting with the NASPA Graduate Assistant Program or the NPGS KC), as well as BIPOC individuals (through partnership with identity-based KCs).
Developing a Further Focus on Research and Scholarship
- The GSKC acknowledges that bridging the scholarship-to-practice divide is integral to our work. This philosophy is evident through the Lavender Papers the KC produces, as well as the research grants it offers.
- Our goal would be to continue fostering a focus on research and scholarship by way of:
- Augmenting and nurturing faculty relationships with the GSKC
- Developing research projects relevant to the queer and trans community, with a potential of appointing a scholar-in-residence for the GSKC
Expanding the Reach of the Knowledge Community
- The GSKC has historically shown a desire to work collaboratively with other
- stakeholders in the NASPA community. This practice has included partnering with identity-based Knowledge Communities.
- Through our roles as potential co-chairs, we would see to it that these partnerships with other KCs continues with a focus on fostering intersectional and anti-racist practices within the organization. We would also like to draw connections to similar entities or other professional groups (e.g., in ACPA or the Consortium of Higher Education LGBT Resource Professionals).
