Interim Director of Student Conduct and Community Standards
University of Kansas
Dr. Katie L. Treadwell researches and writes extensively about the aftermath of university crises and the subsequent experiences of campus first responders. She developed her professional identity in higher education through roles in Oklahoma City, Waco, Texas, and New York City, three cities deeply altered by terrorism and the aftermath of disaster. Her father was a medical first responder to the Oklahoma City federal building bombing. As a new student affairs professional, she encountered a high-profile suspected active shooter situation and served on the institution’s review team to improve emergency management and communications. Inspired by her own experience with campus and community tragedy, Dr. Treadwell primarily researches the personal experiences of higher education administrators who encounter high-profile campus disasters.
Dr. Treadwell has nearly 15 years of experience in higher education administration, including significant roles in crisis response, residential life, sexual assault prevention, suicide prevention and response, alcohol risk reduction, and mental health outreach. In 2015, she was recognized as one of Teachers College’s outstanding graduates and new alumni to watch.
