Associate Professor of the Practice, Higher Education Administration, Dept. of Leadership, Policy, and Organizations
Brenda McKenzie serves as Associate Professor of the Practice and program director of the Higher Education Administration (HEA) program at Vanderbilt University. She serves as the primary faculty teaching courses in the HEA student affairs concentration, specifically courses on student development theory and the practice of student affairs. She also teaches a doctoral course that addresses today's college students and what that means for being a higher education leader. Within these courses, she incorporates lessons on assessment, interviewing and focus group facilitation, and rubric development for practice. Her research interests focus on the development of HESA graduate students, college student leadership development, and women and leadership. Prior to becoming faculty, Dr. McKenzie was a student affairs professional for 23 years with experience in leadership development, student activities, orientation/first-year programs, and residence life. These roles included responsibility for developing departmental learning outcomes and coordinating assessment initiatives.
