Please follow the guidelines below to submit a book proposal to NASPA. A book proposal of the following kind should be submitted irrespective of whether the book has already been written or not. There is no prescribed length for proposals, but most tend to be at least 3 pages long. They should in all cases include the following information:
- Proposed Title. One sentence or less that summarizes the book's mission.
- Author/Editor Bio. Brief credentials explaining why you are an excellent candidate to write this book. If you are submitting a proposal for a collaborative volume please indicate clearly who the contributors are and what they will write on. Affiliations should be supplied. Indicate names as they should appear on the title page and in all promotional copy
- Complete Book Outline. A breakdown of the table of contents with descriptions of each chapter.
- Topic Summary. Outline the goals and scope of the work. Provide a rationale for why this topic is of considerable market interest, and what problem the book will solve for readers.
- Book Description. How will the book achieve the goals set forth in the Topic Summary? Explain the topic coverage, note any special features to be included, describe any CD- or Web-based ideas that could add value to the book.
- Description of the intended readership. Job descriptions/titles of the typical readership; any required knowledge/experience assumed; level of experience; primary audience vs. secondary audiences; size of the market.
- Description of the proposed length of the book and its intended date of completion. Estimated page count; estimated time to complete writing of the book; note any special features such as exercises, margin notes, chapter-ending tests, etc. Please provide your timeline.
- An explanation of how the book relates to other books/resources on the topic that have been published. What will this book achieve that is new? Please list competitive titles published or soon to be published and describe how yours will differ.
- Are you soliciting endorsements for the back cover of the book? If so, please let us know whom you plan to contact.
- Do you have personal media contacts? If so, please list them.
- Please list any specialized publications (journals, newspapers, magazines, alumni or university publications) that should receive review copies of the book. (We will automatically send this to the major book review outlets.)
- Please list any specialized publications we should consider for advertising.
- Are there any awards for which we should nominate your book?
- Are there any Internet sites or blogs we should contact for promotional purposes? Please include organization name and the web address. Do you have a personal website or blog?
- If there is a local or favorite bookstore that you would like us to ask to stock extra copies of your book, we will attempt to contact them and encourage them to do so.
This proposal should be sent to Melissa Dahne, director of publications, via e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org. It may be sent out for external review or circulated to editorial and marketing colleagues, and so you should not expect to hear back from the director of publications for several weeks. When you do hear back, you will be told whether your project fits with NASPA's current publishing plans in a given subject, and if it does, you will be asked to submit a complete typescript or sample chapters as appropriate. The review process varies in length depending on the nature of the project, the number of reviews considered necessary to reach a publishing decision, and even the time of year of the submission.
