MISSION:
The NASPA Faculty Fellows group was established in 2002 to provide consultation and contributions to NASPA in the following areas:
- Direct policy input on such issues as quality assurance in student affairs, diversity, and graduate preparation;
- Promote scholarship as part of the professional responsibility for all faculty and practitioners; and
- Provide direction concerning NASPA research priorities and initiatives.
The Faculty Fellows group is comprised of 12 faculty members, each appointed to a 3-year term. Terms are staggered, with only four faculty members being appointed each year. Of the four members appointed each year, one is a full professor, two are associate professors, and one is an affiliate/adjunct faculty member. Members may be appointed to an additional 3-year term upon the recommendation of the Faculty Fellows.
Since this group was established the executive director of NASPA has stated that the Faculty Fellows will be the "voice" of faculty within NASPA, and issues of concern to faculty should be directed to the Fellows. The Faculty Fellows are distinct from other groups, such as knowledge communities. The Faculty Fellows have taken the initiative to try to assure that the annual conference is meaningful for faculty and will be undertaking other measures to assure that faculty have a professional home within NASPA.
ALIGNMENT OF FACULTY FELLOWS WITH NASPA STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES
- The Faculty Fellows have been promoting a broader conversation about the use of adjunct faculty in graduate preparation programs, and sponsored a program at the 2005 NASPA Conference on this issue. We are also planning a follow-up program for the 2006 NASPA Conference.
- Members of the Faculty Fellows have a research agenda that directly impacts the knowledge base on issues of professional competencies, standards, and career development in student affairs.
- The Faculty Fellows have proposed a Faculty Summit for faculty in all graduate preparation programs in the country, and have obtained seed money from the NASPA Foundation for this effort.
- We are engaged in a major study of those teaching in our graduate preparation programs. This study will lead to a publication.
- The Faculty Fellows are engaged in scholarship on Best Practices in the use of adjunct faculty that has the potential to shape institutional policy in this area.
- Our data gathering on who is teaching in the professional preparation programs will create the opportunity for an evidence-based conversation regarding the diversity of faculty on our teaching staffs within the preparation programs.
- The existence of the NASPA Faculty Fellows is a powerful example of how faculty and vice presidents can work together for the benefit of the profession. The Faculty Fellows are committed to having at least one third of their members be vice presidents/associate vice presidents in universities with graduate preparation programs.
- The Faculty Fellows are attempting to provide viable theory-to-practice models for enhancing student learning. Our ongoing activity reflects the connection between faculty and administrators involved in promoting and supporting student learning and development. Our conference programs attempt to enhance faculty-administrator understanding around issues of importance to those concerned with translating theory into practice.
- The Faculty Fellows encourage all regional vice presidents to work hard to make sure that all regional boards have at least one faculty representative and that the faculty member be charged with promoting faculty involvement within NASPA at the regional level.
- Each regional NASPA Conference should schedule at least one faculty gathering within the context of their annual meeting.
