Pre-Conference Institute
The Parent and Family Relations Knowledge Community presented the annual Parent and Family Relations Institute on Sunday, March 13 entitled Parent and Family Engagement: Working across Student Affairs. This full-day session allowed participants who work with parents and families to connect, engage, and interact with colleagues. Student affairs staff who work with parents and families as a devoted office or as part of larger work responsibilities manage a multitude of varying issues, including explaining privacy rights, communicating crisis situati8ons, measuring and assessing programmatic success, maintaining associations/councils, and assisting and channeling fundraising efforts. This institute addressed and engaged the audience regarding these and additional topics and participants had opportunities to connect across institutional type, topic, and paradigm.

2010 CONFERENCE - CHICAGO, IL
The fourth annual Parent and Family Relations Knowledge Community pre-conference institute was held on March 7, 2010. This half-day session allowed participants to choose two of three tracks to attend during the course of the Institute. The Newcomer Track introduced how to build a parent and family program. The Re-Energize track discussed how to maintain a strong program with a highlight on resources. The Best Practices track allowed participants to learn best practices for program design with attention to not only practical solutions but also scholarly research. Participants were given the opportunity to connect with one another as well as seasoned administrators that work with parents and families in higher education. 2009 CONFERENCE - SEATTLE, WA
The third annual Parent and Family Relations Knowledge Community pre-conference institute took place on March 8, 2009. Parents and families of college students are now a fixture in the landscape of our institutions. Colleges and universities are taking different approaches to parent involvement, but virtually every institution is faced with the decision about how they want to manage these important constituents. This pre-conference institute highlighted key concepts and strategies for developing effective and healthy partnerships with parents and families to help facilitate student success.
