Welcome

Greetings from the National Chair of the Men & Masculinities Knowledge Community for the 2011-2013 term. It is with great hope that I begin my tenure following such dynamic and great leadership. I recall attending my first meeting of the MMKC when Dr. Jason Laker was the Chair and feeling like this very young KC was on the precipice of becoming something important and impactful within NASPA. Since that meeting, Ryan Barone, Rachel Wagoner and Brian Reed have since taken the helm of the MMKC. It is the result of all of their leaderships that our small KC has enjoyed an increase in both membership and impact on the field by providing many resources on men and masculinities issues to college campuses across the nation.

I began my involvement with the MMKC as its humble newsletter editor; a position created for me by Ryan Barone. That position has since evolved into the Technology Chair position, adding Facebook and blog duties to the job description. In 2009, I was tapped as the Region I Representative for the MMKC and I worked diligently to represent the MMKC in Region I by providing consultation to many of my colleagues in the region dealing with issues of men on their respective campuses.

My vision for the MMKC is to bring all levels of professionals from graduate students to Senior Student Affairs Officers and Faculty together to continue the discourse, scholarship, and practice of men and masculinities at the college level.

I will continue to put forward the mission and learning objectives of the Men & Masculinities Knowledge Community that were set by my predecessors. They are excellent guiding principles that have served our KC well; particularly, for clearly delineating what our principles are and are not. In these times of growing right-wing men’s movements, it is critical that the MMKC defines itself as the positive, inclusive alternative to the growing patriarchy-based rhetoric.

Should you have any questions about the MMKC or are in need of resources on working and engaging college-aged men on your campus, please feel free to contact myself or any of the dedicated members of our team

Sincerely,

Osvaldo Del Valle, M.A., Ed.M.
